Gain skills to provide emergency medical care in a range of situations. [For students with existing vocational qualification such as NZ Certificate in Emergency Care (level 3), NZ Diploma in Ambulance Practice (Level 5), Paramedic, EMT and FR]

This Flexible Learning Stream (FLS) of the Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) is designed for students with an existing NZ Certificate in Emergency Care (level 3) or NZ Diploma in Ambulance Practice (Level 5) or equivalent preceding qualification with a practice level of FR, EMT or paramedic. 

A letter of support from the student's employing authority is essential. If you are not currently working or volunteering for an emergency ambulance service, please refer to the mainstream of the degree.

The Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989. It is run in conjunction with Wellington Free Ambulance and approved by the Council of Ambulance Authorities and Paramedics Australasia for entry to paramedic practice in New Zealand and Australia. The degree is fully accredited and you can access student loans and allowances. The Flexible Learning stream allows working and volunteering paramedics to choose their own pace of study and up to six years may be taken to complete the degree. 

Academic qualification equivalents

  • Completion of All India Senior School Certificate (CBSE) or Indian School Certificate (CISCE).

English language requirements (one of the below):

IELTS:Minimum IELTS 6.5 (no lower than 6.0 in any band), or equivalent
Please note, some Whitireia degree level programmes require a higher level of English language competence.
